SAMSUNG Introduces 1.8” 64GB Flash-based Solid State Drive!!!! HOT!!!
Samsung Electronics announced at its annual Mobile Solution Forum in Taipei that it has developed a 1.8″-type 64 Gigabyte (GB) flash-solid state drive (SSD). The new flash-SSD is based on an eight gigabit (Gb) single-level-cell (SLC) NAND, which provides significantly higher performance over conventional SSDs. The read and write performance of the new SLC flash-SSD have been increased by 20 percent and 60 percent respectively over the 32GB flash-SSD Samsung introduced last year, meaning that the new SSD’s ability to outperform conventional rotating-media hard drives is even greater than had been anticipated. Samsung plans to start mass production of the 1.8″-type 64GB flash-SSD in the second quarter of this year. Samsung’s continued nano-technology migration is a key enabling factor in the continued market segmentation for storage media. Besides the use of the 64 GB flash-SSD for notebook PCs, 8~16GB flash-SSDs will become viable solutions for use in personal navigation systems and digital camcorders, as will and hundred GB-level flash-SSDs for use in the server market. The flash-SSD, a drop-in replacement for a hard disk drive, is a secure and reliable means of storing personal or work-related data. It uses instantly-accessible, non-moving NAND flash memory instead of the noisier, power-hungry, jarring-sensitive rotating disc found in conventional hard drives, allowing it to upload and download data quickly and quietly with minimal power consumption. The SSD market is expected to reach US$6.8 billion by 2010 – an impressive compound annual growth rate of over 200 percent.

Women, Not Men, Are Primary Electronics Consumers!!!
![]()
“From politics to technology, women have played a vital role in shaping today’s society. Some of these achievements and other various tidbits are being highlighted during International Women’s Day on March 8. In regards to the technology spectrum, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) reports that women are the primary consumers when it comes to wireless gadgets and gizmos. According to CEA officials, women are outspending men in electronics purchases US$55 billion to US$41 billion. The trade organization also reports that women influence 90 percent of consumer electronics purchases which amounts to a lot of money when factory-to-dealer sales of consumer electronics are projected to exceed US$155 billion in 2007.”

This comes via Core77.com; “Attention “I must have all things Mac” fanatics: Soren Kjaer and Holmris Hansen A/S have joined forces in the creation of MILK, a desk devoted entirely to Mac machines and monitors, designed with the particular equipment and user in mind. Features include convertible “boxes” (fish tank, storage, bin), specific cable drawers and exits, height-adjustable base, surface finish options, and hidden filing/storage space. The site looks hot but it pretty much promises the world, so let’s hope that MILK owners are satisfied with their purchase. The price is hard to find/has been conveniently omitted btw.”

Cisco Systems’ lawsuit against Apple Over The Use Of the Name ”IPhone”!!
Is a “minor skirmish” that could have been avoided if Apple had been willing to negotiate, the International Herald Tribune reported on Thursday.
“We told Apple for five years, ‘This is our trademark. We’ll license it to you, but it is ours,’” Chambers said in an interview carried on The New York Times‘ Web site.
“All we ask is that people respect our trademarks and our intellectual property,” he told the paper. “We would have traded that for just interoperability,” or the ability of the Apple phone to work smoothly with Cisco products.
Cisco owns the iPhone trademark and sued Apple after it announced that its cell phone-iPod product would be called the iPhone as well.
Apple had been difficult to do business with, Chambers also said, according to the International Herald Tribune.
Representatives for Apple and Cisco were not immediately available for comment.
On a separate topic, Chambers said Cisco’s most likely competitors in the future would come out of Asia, especially China, according to the International Herald Tribune.
He also said Cisco was looking to Asia for technology skills and acquisition targets, the paper reported.
Chambers was in Paris to meet with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Lebanon Prime Minister Fouad Siniora while on his way to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, this week, the paper said.

Wimax Standard Signed Up By IBM!!!
IBM has joined the WiMax Forum, an industry organisation that promotes the upcoming wireless standard.WiMax is designed to deliver high-speed wireless internet access over a wide range, and operators expect the technology to provide internet connections in metropolitan areas as a replacement for DSL and cable broadband.
The technology is also expected to bring internet connections to rural areas where constructing wired networks is not economically viable. IBM is hoping to sell consultancy services to operators, assisting in the transition from switched environments to IP-based networks.

Vista Media Packaging Shots & NY Launch Summary!!
ActiveWin have posted a few photos of the DVD packaging, you can view them here. Sidebar Geek’s Brandon posted an extensive summary of the launch event in New York:
At the event, Microsoft really went all out showcasing the kind of hardware that will make using Windows Vista rock. There were areas set up to highlight key hardware that go hand-in-hand with Windows Vista and I took some shots I’d like to share:
They had devices from Logitech, Buffalo, NVIDIA, ViewSonic, Samsung, iRiver, and of course Microsoft. Those monitors looked pretty nice. However I’ve got my eye on the Wireless Entertainment Desktop 8000! Saw a few Zunes and Xbox 360′s around as well.
Microsoft had a pretty cool gaming area setup to showcase Games for Windows.. you can read the full blog article here.
Also, Microsoft have published v1.2 of the Release Notes for Windows Vista. WGA is not required for this download.

Google to build video search engine!!!!!
Google has started integrating items from YouTube into its video search results as it starts to build a comprehensive video search and content platform. The search giant previously offered only videos uploaded by users to Google Video, which was launched in January 2006. Google acquired YouTube last October for $1.65bn. Google confirmed that its video search will expand further beyond content uploaded directly to its servers.
“Today is the first step in our plan to bring you a comprehensive video search and content platform. We will provide ongoing updates as they unfold,” wrote Salar Kamangar, vice president of product marketing at Google, on a company blog. Building a video search engine is challenging because movies cannot be indexed and ranked in the same way as traditional web content, as video files do not currently contain any data that informs search robots of its contents.

802.11n Draft Standard Almost Ready!!!
Last week’s IEEE meeting in London demonstrated that the move to the next stage of Wi-Fi is nearly ready. At the meeting, 802.11n committee members unanimously approved draft standard version 1.10, and agreed to create version 2.0, which should be ready in the near future. The outstanding issues before the committee were resolved, clearing all remaining hurdles to the interim standard. This means that the Wi-Fi Alliance can publish specifications that will allow manufacturers to build 11n products knowing that they will be compatible.
“Every once in a while the stars kind of align. People had very realistic expectations. For the few remaining issues we had to find simple reliable solutions,” said Atheros Communications Chief Technology Officer Bill McFarland, who participated in the standards meetings. McFarland said that the primary hurdles were how to make sure that 11n devices would work with legacy 802.11 devices, and at the same time not interfere with them. Those devices include Wi-Fi devices using 802.11b and 11g, as well as Bluetooth devices.
The approval of the draft standard, and the almost certain approval of Draft 2.0, has brought about a flurry of announcements. McFarland, for example, said that his company would be bringing out products that meet the standard soon, and he said that existing pre-standard 11n products would be field-upgradable.

Motorola makes Linux breakthrough with RIZR Z6!!!
Could gain a headstart on low-cost smartphones?

Motorola’s first Linux handset for the US market, the RIZR Z6, is also likely to be the first in the industry to run an “open” operating system – Linux, Symbian OS or Windows on a single- rather than dual-processor architecture.
This shows that Linux is making significant improvements in its suitability to be an operating system for mobile devices, and could give Motorola a significant headstart in the battle to create low power, low cost smartphones.
It is also significant that Motorola said it had worked closely with Microsoft in the creation of the handset. This was primarily to allow it to sync with PCs running Windows Media, but indicates the gradual softening of Microsoft’s attitude to working proactively with non-Windows platforms, as well as its growing closeness to Motorola.
The RIZR will run Windows Media with its digital rights management to support 3G and EDGE downloads. In most smartphones there is a baseband processor running a real time OS for basic tasks, mainly signal processing, and a separate applications processor with the complex OS. While dividing control and data functions is usual in all types of network devices, it adds cost, complexity and power consumption for mobile devices.
MontaVista, Motorola’s long time Linux supplier for phones, has been working for several years to add sufficient real time determinism to its Mobilinux software stack to enable single processor phone designs. It seems it has made the breakthrough of boosting Linux to support functions such as voice processing and modem control, for which its real time capabilities were previously inadequate.
Other companies are working on alternative approaches. Infineon (in conjunction with FSM Labs), Jaluna, and Trango have all worked on virtualisation software and real time overlays to split a mobile phone’s physical resources between multiple operating systems, but none has gained a product deal as yet.

The RIZR Z6, demonstrated at the CES show and expected to ship by mid year, is said to be based on Freescale’s i.MX31 system-on-chip, one of the first to use the ARM11 core. Motorola will also add a new, faster Linux user interface, called JUIX (pronounced “juice”).
As Linux becomes more mainstream in cellphones, many players are seeking to address its user interface shortcomings, notably Nokia, which has become a Linux convert of late, and Access, the Japanese browser maker that acquired Palmsource and is adapting the well-liked Palm UI for mobile Linux.
